Shoe Storage Ideas - Thinking Outside the Shoe Box

!±8± Shoe Storage Ideas - Thinking Outside the Shoe Box

Sometimes finding space for shoe storage simply means using space you already have, knowing what products are available and being creative... "thinking outside the shoe box" if you will.

How much space do you have?

You need to have good measurements for your closet or entryway.  Closet products are generally sized in 12 inch intervals as a closets are usually 24 inches deep but your entrance way can be large enough for a storage bench or small enough that it won't even accommodate shoe storage so get good measurements.

How many shoes need to be stored?

Which shoes do you wear most often and which ones are simply stored away?  We usually only wear about 20% of what we own so some of your footwear will be worn often and those are the items that you need to keep readily accessible.  Everything else can be stored away.

 Products for shoe storage

Boxes- boxes are suitable for storing shoes that are not to be accessed frequently.  Look for clear plastic boxes so you can easily identify what is in there.  Make sure if you are using boxes for shoe storage that are all of the same variety and that they are made to stack together. Shoe racks - shoe racks can be plastic coated metal, laminate, and melamine covered particle board and even real cedar.  Look for shoe racks with stackable components so you can use the vertical space in your closet. Try raising the closet rod to 72 inches and then putting the shoe rack on the floor.  This arrangement provides space for shoe storage and still allows enough vertical space above your shoes for hanging garments.  You will need about 8-9 inches per pair of shoes so a 24 inch lineal space on a shoe rack could accommodate 3 pairs of shoes stored side by side.  Generally shoe racks made for storing shoes in this way are manufactured in 24 inch widths. Underbed shoe storage - some products are now made to fit underneath the bed to provide use of space that is otherwise wasted.  Underbed  units are made of either soft plastic or rigid plastic boxes with hinged lids.  This is another shoe storage idea for those shoes that are not accessed often.  If you need extra space under the bed to accommodate a storage unit then raise the bed a few inches. There are specific products available called "bed risers"  that can be used to get the bed a few inches higher in order to make the  horizontal surface under the bed more usable for storage.  You can even go to the big box store and purchase bed casters that are adjustable to different heights and they might provide the few extra inches you need.

Think  "outside the shoe box"

It is not always necessary to use a product designed for shoe storage if you want to store shoes.  Other types of furniture can sometimes do just as well.  I have seen metal lockers,  book cases, storage baskets, and even laundry baskets used to corral those loose shoes.

Here are three ideas for shoe storage that essentially make good use of products that were designed  for something else.

Do you have a  big decorative clay pot?  Instead of planting a plant in there and dealing with all the dirt and constant watering use it to store shoes right by the entry way. A  vertical CD holder  doesn't have to be for CD's, some of them are great for storing your footwear. One of the most creative shoe storage ideas I have seen is the use of an  entertainment unit  placed at the end of a king size bed.  It is often hard to find a bench that will span the entire width of a king size bed but this unit fit perfectly and the owners used the "cubbies" for shoe storage.  If also provided a perfect place to sit while donning shoes.

So if you want new and original shoe storage ideas for all of those shoes you have on the floor and not on your feet, just get creative and think outside the shoe box.

Moving From the Crib to a Bed (With Twins)

!±8± Moving From the Crib to a Bed (With Twins)

How do you know when your child is ready to move from the crib to a big bed?

Each child is different, some parents can hold off on this transition until age 3 while others show signs of readiness by as early as 18 months. Keeping safety in mind, it is time to make the move if your child is demonstrating the ability to get out of the crib on their own. The twins began climbing / jumping out at age 19 months. We have wood floors in the nursery, making this move a priority to beds a priority.

What are the things I should do to prepare for this move?

Now's the time to make doubly sure baby /toddler proofing is fully ready for a child (or two children in this case) being alone and free in the room. Secure any furniture that could tip of climbed on, add drawer locks where needed, inspect for missing plug covers, make any cords unreachable, check blind and curtain cords, and place a safety gate at their door to prevent wandering. The diaper pail can be a big toddler magnet, so make sure your pail is either locked in a closet, placed up on the changing table at night, or is one that you feel confident is toddler tamper proof. We recently switched to this new Munchkin Diaper Pail and have yet to have an issue.

I'd also suggest you consider a placing video baby monitor in the room especially for twins or more. A video monitor enables you to view what they are doing without going in and upsetting the mood unnecessarily. On the flip side, it can also show you times you should go in such as when one is sitting on the other's leg. We are using the Safety1st Prism Video Baby Monitor to keep an eye on our twins when alone in their room and are quite pleased with it.

How does one ease into this big move from crib to bed?

Some experts suggest you start slowly by napping in new bed and sleeping overnight in the crib, but sometimes this isn't possible especially with twins. The space required for all those beds usually isn't there. Plus, if you are making the move due to safety concerns, why delay?

I'd suggest making the new beds as exciting, special, and comfortingly familiar as possible. If your move is to a toddler bed, use the same bedding, but add a special new pillowcase and or blanket. If you are moving your child to a twin or larger bed, consider allowing your child to pick out the new sheets or making an accent pillow from the old bedding.

Any Toddler terrific finds for this move?

We found the absolute perfect pillowcases for this important move, Milo & Gabby Cozy Companions. They sent us a couple of their animal shaped pillowcases for review and the twins along with the rest of us adore them. They are made from ultra-soft 100% cotton with soft poly fill in in the tails, ears, fins or feet. You just put them on any standard sized pillow you already own. The twins are very into all dog things right now, so two of the "Harold the Dog" style pillowcases were a huge success. Other styles include a cat, a bunny, a dinosaur, a horse, and a fish. ( Watch for a giveaway of the cat style pillow soon!)

Toddler Beds or Twin Beds?

We personally went with inexpensive toddler beds from Ikea for the twins. Our cribs actually convert to twin beds, but we decided not to move straight into those just yet. We felt the twins would benefit from the extra room to play right now. We also liked the smaller cozier aspect of toddler beds since they are making this move fairly young.

We currently have the two toddler beds pushed together with a bolster / body style pillow in the middle (not pictured) to keep them from falling in the crack or rolling on the other. We actually re-purposed our two much beloved nursing pillows for this bolster, by placing both nesting pillows in a single body pillowcase. If you do decide to go with twin beds, look into bed rails to keep them from rolling off. Other options are lots of pillows on the floor or even just using the mattress at first.

Other basic needs?

Don't forget to leave a spot in bed or near the bed for other comfort items your child might want. Their stuffed dog, favorite blankie, pacifier if still being used, and even a water filled sippy cup by the bed. A nightlight is also a good idea, although my plug into the socket style seem to be a bit too interesting to curious toddlers. I just spotted one of those "take with you" style nightlights by Munchkin in a dog style the other day. I may just have to hit Target to snag a couple as Valentine gifts to the little guys. (That way, I can place them on a dresser and hide the cord.)

Last minute tips?

Stick with your evening / bedtime routine as much as possible. Follow all of the same procedures for going to bed as you would when they were going down in their cribs. Only now, perhaps you can sit on the edge of the bed to sing or read.

Our routine goes something like this... After dinner, daddy and one of the siblings bring the twins upstairs to bathe, put on jammies, and brush teeth while the rest of us do downstairs clean up. The twins then come into our room to play quietly while the family plays with them and catches up a tad on a favorite T.V. show. Eventually the twins mellow fully and we move into their room for storytime and some cuddles.

Remember this is a process that takes time. I've done this with my 3 older children and now it is time for the twins. Each child was different and thus each transition took a different length of time and had unique adjustments that had to be made. Remain patient and consistent, good luck!

Imaginative Play Games, Scenarios, Ideas - Benefits of Pretend Play for Child's Development

!±8± Imaginative Play Games, Scenarios, Ideas - Benefits of Pretend Play for Child's Development

The importance of Imaginative play in child's development cannot be stressed enough. In our modern overly technological society a child's imagination is often paralyzed with fast-moving pictures of a television set or brightly colored 3-D worlds of computer games. Often, parents concentrate on getting their preschoolers school-ready by paying a lot of attention to learning the alphabet and numbers but forgetting how important it is to nurture their child's imagination. A number of psychological studies have shown that pretend play prepares children for life in the real world because during play children learn important life skills like taking turns, sharing responsibility, empathy and many others. So let's see what games we can come up with to foster our children's imagination.

House/Cave/Camping Tent

To set up this game you will need two chairs, one big blanket and a flashlight. You can also use a table instead of the chairs.

If you are in a "Cave" or a "Tent" gather some food supplies and water and prepare for an adventure. Turn off all the lights in the room and leave the flashlight on, search the dark room with the flashlight, can you see any wild animals lurking in the woods? What can you hear? Can you hear the birds and that waterfall nearby? You can even make a pretend fire and toast some real marshmallows over it, yum!!

If you are in a "House" you can invite some friends over (furry animals, dolls), put some pillows and blankets on the floor and have a slumber party!

Car

Cut out the wheel from a cardboard box or use anything round you might find around the house. You can sit on a chair (wind the windows down, take down the roof - it's a convertible after all!) or "drive" around on foot. You can even have a race! Ask mum if she wants a ride!

Family

This game is wonderful as it allows the child to swap places with the parent and become mummy or daddy for a short while. You can play it with a doll or mum and dad can play the role of the child for a change. Notice how your child behaves during this game, it will be fascinating to hear what they say and see what they do, how they discipline or reward you - it will be like looking at yourself in the mirror because they, of course, will be mimicking what you do and how you behave on a daily basis. Great for building self-esteem and awareness of self and others.

Boat/Ship

Anything in the house can become a boat or a ship with a little bit of imagination. You can turn two chairs pushed together, a couch or even a bed into a boat or a ship. Get all the passengers on board (do they all have their tickets?) and don't forget your supplies. Take some fishing rods and a bucket with you so you can do some fishing (make fishing rods out of thin tree branches and some rope or wool thread).

If you want something different on your next trip, a boat can become a train or even an airplane.

Doctor's Office

Those toy doctor's kits are excellent for pretend play but even if you don't have one you can collect some household objects to play this game. For example, a pen and pad to write out prescriptions, a plastic syringe to administer medicine or even give those ouchy shots, a small jar of jelly beans in case a patient has a headache or a belly ache and needs a pill, stretchy bandages to tape those serious wounds and band-aids for small cuts. In the absence of a toy stethoscope you can make one out of a simple empty toilet roll by cutting one open, rolling it into a thinner tube and gluing it back together - you can use it as a stethoscope or to check out the ears and the throat.

Shopping

You will need a shopping bag, a wallet with some coins in it, groceries, like a bag of pasta shapes, some apples and bananas, a can of peas and a box of cookies and a cash register made out of a shoe box or any other useful box you can find around the house. Take turns being a shopkeeper and a shopper. If you want your child to learn some math and counting along the way, you can make some pretend paper money out of paper, make sure the numbers on your pretend paper bills are large and clear. Make price labels on all the groceries in the shop and try to pay correct money for everything and give the right change. Make a shopping list so you can check things off the list when you put them in your shopping bag.

Cooking

For this fun and exciting game you will need pots, pans and other cooking utensils. Other things that might help are grains like rice, lentils or dry beans, pasta shapes and even cereal like cheerios. Put the ingredients into the pot, add salt and pepper, stir. When the meal is ready, get some plates out and invite friends for dinner.

Helping mum or dad with real cooking is also lots of fun, like beating the eggs for an omelette or tearing up lettuce for a salad.

Dress-up

Lots of old clothes is, of course, what's needed for this game - anything from skirts and shoes to hats and bags. But the best way to play is to pick a theme and dress accordingly. "Kings and Queens" is a fun theme to dress up for but you will need to make your own crowns and capes. The best thing about this game is that you can use as much dress jewellery as you have lying around the house.

Birthday Party

A pretend Birthday cake and party food can be made from play-doh and you can even use real candles with it. Invite all the stuffed furry animals and all the dolls that live at your house to your party, perhaps even some real friends can come if they are visiting at the time. To make the party more fun you can have a disco afterwards - turn some music on and dance together.

In the park

The park provides so many opportunities to play creatively and imaginatively. Use anything you might find - sticks, stones, dry leaves. You can make little houses out of everything you find, you can even play the shopping or the cooking game - sticks, dry leaves, grass and little flowers make perfect ingredients for a yummy soup.

There are as many of these games as there are objects around you and situations you encounter every day. Eventually, when your child knows that you are free and open to pretend and be anything they like they will suggest their own ideas, like pretending to be butterflies or horses, for example. Don't be shy, spread your wings and fly, stretch your legs and gallop away!
